Korben's cabin fever leads to an Apprenticeship

Albion Park Rail student, Korben Ryan has snagged an apprenticeship during the official handover of three new cabins from his TAFE to Windang Tourist Park.

Korben was one of 18 TAFE NSW Illawarra students who built the new cabins as part of their studies in Certificate II in Construction, which is all about training to develop skills that lead to employment.

And as the stars aligned, Korben was unable to attend the ceremony because he was busy signing up to a new apprenticeship with Integrity New Homes and is ready to learn more about the carpentry trade.

The building of the cabins is part of a long-term relationship between Wollongong City Council and TAFE NSW Illawarra.

On his future: “I’d like to complete my apprenticeship, bank some money and build my own house,” says Korben.

About the course: “At the start, it was a little tough but we all pulled together, learned from our mistakes and started listening to each other.”

Over the past 12 years, TAFE students have built about 45 cabins for Council’s tourist parks at Windang, Bulli and Corrimal.

“This is a long-standing collaboration and a really positive one as it provides the students with practical skills and Council with well-built and finished cabins for its popular tourist parks,” says Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM.

Belinda Mackinnon, TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute Director is proud of these projects and the career start it offers students in the building industry.

“We are pleased to report that so far 13 of the 18 students enrolled in the construction course have been offered an apprenticeship which is a great outcome. This program continues to be successful for both the students who are seeking employment as well as the employers,” says Ms Mackinnon.

“Students have the opportunity to transfer their theoretical knowledge into hands-on experience when they construct these cabins. It gives them a tangible way to build and showcase their skills,” she says.

The two-bedroom cabins come fully self-contained with a full kitchen and bathroom facilities.
