Empathy is at the heart of the fundraising events to be held across our campuses to help a Nepalese community rebuild their school. Two dinners will be held in October at both Nowra and Wollongong training restaurants.
Dharmik Trading, with the support of TAFE NSW Illawarra, will host the events to raise vital funds for the rebuilding of essential facilities that were affected in the Nepal earthquakes.
Keith Bourke, Teacher Consultant at TAFE NSW Illawarra and co-owner of Dharmik Trading, along with his team are helping the people of the Kavre region to build an earthquake-safe metal framed building to provide public education for children who have not had a local school since the earthquakes in 2015.
"Schools are a very important asset in village communities within Nepal as many parents see education as key to a better future for their children and ultimately it is their only way out of poverty," says Keith.
“We are raising money to take a bunch of TAFE teachers, trade and carpentry students to Nepal to rebuild some village school rooms,” he says.
“Nepal has limited public education and in many villages, there are no functional public services at all and many smaller communities only have what they can build for themselves.
"Although we hope this project will be of great benefit to the people of Kavre, we are certain this trip will provide an amazing learning experience for our students.”
Dharmik Trading is a small social business that trades with Nepal to provide employment opportunities and income to disadvantaged communities. It currently operates throughout New South Wales and Queensland supplying Nepalese clothing, handicrafts and homewares through retailers, markets and online.
